Wang’s sexual access to Yee is initially instrumental—part of a political mission—but it morphs into a terrain where agency and submission blur. Lee’s long takes of sexual encounters make intimacy uncomfortable and ambiguous; moments meant to signal dominance or manipulation often read as mutual dependency. Yee’s authority—political, social, and masculine—is complicated by his private need for connection, while Wang’s apparent submission conceals psychological bargaining and moral corrosion.

Ang Lee's direction is, as always, impeccable. The film's cinematography is breathtaking, with a muted color palette and meticulous production design that transport viewers to 1930s Shanghai. The atmospheric score, composed by Alex Heffes, adds to the tension and emotional depth of the film.
