Koike | Emiko
Koike is arguably the most acute chronicler of the Japanese baito (part-time) and seishain (full-time) worker since the Lost Decade. Her characters are almost always white-collar professionals in mid-to-late career, a demographic usually ignored by literary fiction (which favors youth or the elderly).
Throughout her work, Koike seeks to challenge conventional notions of art and identity, often incorporating elements of her Japanese-American heritage and exploring the tensions between tradition and innovation. Her innovative and thought-provoking practice has earned her recognition as one of the most exciting young artists working today. emiko koike
