Joan of Arc was born in 1412 in Domremy, a small village in northeastern France. During a time of great turmoil, with the Hundred Years' War raging between France and England, Joan began to experience visions and hear voices, which she believed were messages from God, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret. These divine communications, she claimed, instructed her to drive the English out of France and to crown the Dauphin, Charles VII, as the rightful king.
