A Good Day to Die Hard is reviled. Rightly so, if you want a good film. But as the final chapter of the saga completa , it is devastatingly coherent. McClane travels to Russia to rescue his estranged son, Jack (Jai Courtney), only to discover Jack is a CIA assassin. The plot is nonsense. But the subtext is clear: McClane has nothing left but blood. He destroys Chernobyl. He kills dozens. And at the end, he and Jack share a silent, broken nod. No hugs. No tears. Just the acknowledgment that the family curse has been passed down. The final shot is McClane limping into a gray Moscow morning. He is not heroic. He is not happy. He is simply too hard to kill.
