At water’s edge the lights peeled back like a curtain. The creatures—tentacular and many—rose. They were not monsters in the cartoon sense; their skin was the carved hue of wet pebbles and their eyes—where eyes existed—were threads of gold. They did not move like animals but like things grown in gardens of wind, each limb an extension of the same patient will. Some of the tendrils bore frills and lanterning bulbs; others were lined with ridges that caught the moonlight and threw it back as a map of the town’s streets.
