The film is realistic about art’s limits. It does not claim that singing solves poverty, mental illness, or abandonment. Mondain returns at the end to burn down the school — a traumatic act that nevertheless saves the choir from a trip that would have put them on a runaway bus. The film suggests that even destruction can be ambiguous.
