Guided by the wizard , Frodo and three fellow hobbits—Sam, Merry, and Pippin—flee their home as they are pursued by the terrifying Nazgûl , undead Ringwraiths bound to Sauron's will. Their journey leads them to Rivendell, where a secret council of Elves, Dwarves, and Men decides the Ring's fate: it must be carried into the heart of the enemy's land and cast into the volcanic fires of Mount Doom .
